Calling All KIDS! The planet needs your help!

Do you think we could save our planet one straw at a time? It might seem like using fewer plastic straws can’t make a difference, but it can. Straws are small, but they are creating a HUGE problem. Most plastic straws are meant to be only used once and then thrown away. These single-use plastics have become an enemy to our environment. They are polluting our Earth, our animals, and us!

Let’s fight the fight against single-use plastic!

You may wonder how kids can make a difference but check this out…

Back in 2011, a nine-year-old boy named Milo Cress started a campaign to help reduce the number of plastic straws being used. A campaign is a planned set of activities someone does to reach a goal, or to bring about change.

When Milo was only 8 years old, he noticed whenever he ordered a drink, it would come with a straw. He felt like it was a huge waste, and he started to wonder how many straws were used every day in the United States. He couldn’t find any information about it, so he did his very own research. He concluded that in the United States, we use about 500 MILLION straws EVERY DAY! He figured out that is enough straws to fill 125 school buses EVERY DAY for a WHOLE YEAR!

In February 2011, he began the “Be Straw Free” campaign to help reduce the number of plastic straws in use. He worked with companies who produce straws, restaurants, businesses, schools, and groups of people who wanted to help.  Milo’s story is fascinating! Read more about him and his research HERE and then…

Let’s Get Started!

Even though the problem seems HUGE, there are lots of ways YOU can help reduce the use of plastic straws!!

  • Do not use a straw!  Simply say no to using a straw at all!

  • Use a cool reusable straw! There are so many cool, reusable straws options out there. There are straws made of metal, glass, bamboo, paper, or even some types of plastic or silicone that you can use again and again. Just remember to bring it with you and wash it when you’re done!

  • Tell people about how harmful they are! If you see straws being wasted, politely let people know how straws are damaging the health of our Earth, our animals, and us!

  • Read and Research! Do your own reading and research when it comes to single-use plastics. You will be the next kid to make a difference!!

Little Changes Add Up to Big Differences!
